The Friday 56: Convenience Store Woman

The Friday 56 is a weekly blog meme hosted by Freda’s Voice. The idea is to share an excerpt from a book you’ve been reading every Friday, to promote the book or simply just to showcase your current read!

Friday56

Rules:
*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader
(If you have to improvise, that’s OK.)
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it)
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.
*It’s that simple

I haven’t done my usual Friday 56 posts in quite a few weeks because I’ve been on holiday and just generally busy, but earlier this week, I read Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata for Women In Translation month, and I just had to include this quote from it.

Convenience store woman

When something was strange, everyone thought they had the right to come stomping in all over your life to figure out why. I found that arrogant and infuriating, not to mention a pain in the neck. Sometimes I even wanted to hit them with a shovel to shut them up, like I did in elementary school.

But I recalled how upset my sister had been when I’d casually mentioned this to her before and kept my mouth shut.

This book is a hilarious, satirical, and gives a critical look at how society treats women who don’t have the desire to marry or have children. It’s bold, sharp, and witty, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

What are you reading this week? Have you read any translated literature recently?

Until next time

    1. Aww thank you! 😊 I didn’t create the feature so I can’t take any credit for that, but I do like doing it each week when I can! Convenience Store Woman is a great book, I’ve finished it since I wrote this review and I’d definitely recommend it!
