28 Most Anticipated Releases of 2022: January – June

Anticipated releases posts are always some of my favourites to write. I love researching the books that are coming out soon and getting myself even more excited about them (this is a one-woman hype train, all aboard please).

So, despite this post being a month late, let’s crack out the megaphone and shout about some books.

Why I’m excited for it: I’ve been looking forward to this book for so long, it just sounds like it’s going to be beautifully written and so unique.

Valentine Layton, the Duke of Malvern, has twin problems: literally.

It was always his father’s hope that Valentine would marry Miss Arabella Tarleton. But, unfortunately, too many novels at an impressionable age have caused her to grow up…romantic. So romantic that a marriage of convenience will not do and after Valentine’s proposal she flees into the night determined never to set eyes on him again.

Arabella’s twin brother, Mr. Bonaventure “Bonny” Tarleton, has also grown up…romantic. And fully expects Valentine to ride out after Arabella and prove to her that he’s not the cold-hearted cad he seems to be.

Why I’m excited for it: I loved Boyfriend Material and now Alexis Hall is giving us historical romance?? And it’s queer?? With a hero’s journey??? My skin is watered and my crops are thriving.

Why I’m excited for it: It’s an underwater sea tale about magical creatures, gods, and an enchantment, I honestly couldn’t be more excited.

Five hundred years of peace between queendoms shatters when girls inexplicably stop being born. As the Drought of Girls stretches across a generation, it sets off a cascade of political and personal consequences across all five queendoms of the known world, throwing long-standing alliances into disarray as each queendom begins to turn on each other—and new threats to each nation rise from within.

Why I’m excited for it: I love books set in matriarchal societies and this sounds like a sweeping epic fantasy. It’s also been compared to The Priory of the Orange Tree, which is one of my all-time favourite fantasy books, and that comp makes me very excited.

Why I’m excited for it: NEW V.E. SCHWAB BOOK.

Jerusalem, 1192. The Third Crusade rages on. Rahma al-Hud loyally followed her elder sister Zeena into the war over the Holy Land, but now that the Faranji invaders have gotten reinforcements from Richard the Lionheart, all she wants to do is get herself and her sister home alive.

Why I’m excited for it: It’s a Robin Hood retelling from Aminah Mae Safi, whose writing I really like.

Fifteen-year-old Sloane can incinerate an enemy at will—she is a Scion, a descendant of the ancient Orisha gods.

Under the Lucis’ brutal rule, her identity means her death if her powers are discovered. But when she is forcibly conscripted into the Lucis army on her fifteenth birthday, Sloane sees a new opportunity: to overcome the bloody challenges of Lucis training, and destroy them from within.

Why I’m excited for it: This sounds like exactly the kind of fast-paced, exciting fantasy novel that I’m in the mood for.

Tania de Batz is most herself with a sword in her hand. Everyone in town thinks her near-constant dizziness makes her weak, nothing but “a sick girl”; even her mother is desperate to marry her off for security. But Tania wants to be strong, independent, a fencer like her father—a former Musketeer and her greatest champion.

Why I’m excited for it: A GENDER-BENT MUSKETEERS RETELLING??? Thank you for answering my prayers Lillie Lainoff.

Why I’m excited for it: Alchemy, mythical beasts, and an unlikely team up between a confident young woman and a smitten awe-struck young man sounds like a combination I’ll love.

Miss Charlotte Pettifer belongs to a secret league of women skilled in the subtle arts. That is to say—although it must never be said—witchcraft. The League of Gentlewomen Witches strives to improve the world in small ways. Using magic, they tidy, correct, and manipulate according to their notions of what is proper, entirely unlike those reprobates in the Wisteria Society.

When the long lost amulet of Black Beryl is discovered, it is up to Charlotte, as the future leader of the League, to make sure the powerful talisman does not fall into the wrong hands. Therefore, it is most unfortunate when she crosses paths with Alex O’Riley, a pirate who is no Mr. Darcy.

With all the world scrambling after the amulet, Alex and Charlotte join forces to steal it together. If only they could keep their pickpocketing hands to themselves! If Alex’s not careful, he might just steal something else—such as Charlotte’s heart.

Why I’m excited for it: I have a copy of India Holton’s first book to read and I’m much looking forward to her second too! The blend of historical romance and fantasy sounds intriguing and fun to me.

For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it’s her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her—the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.

When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom’s greatest shennong-shi—masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making—she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning’s only chance to save her sister’s life.

But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger.

Why I’m excited for it: A book about a competitive, magical tea-making competition with court politics and danger at every turn? Sign me up.

Why I’m excited: It involves a squad team up and is about a heist to right the wrongs of colonialist theft, I’m 4000% on board.

Lady Emily Turner has been a debutante for six seasons now and should have long settled into a suitable marriage. However, due to her father’s large debts, her only suitor is the persistent and odious owner of her father’s favorite gambling house. Meanwhile, Lord Julian Belfry, the second son of a marquess, has scandalized society as an actor and owner of a theater—the kind of establishment where men take their mistresses, but not their wives. When their lives intersect at a house party, Lord Julian hatches a plan to benefit them both.

With a marriage of convenience, Emily will use her society connections to promote the theater to a more respectable clientele and Julian will take her out from under the shadows of her father’s unsavory associates. But they soon realize they have very different plans for their marriage—Julian wants Emily to remain a society wife, while Emily discovers an interest in the theater. Why I’m excited for it: Have I ever mentioned? That I love Regency romance??? No? Well, allow me to reintroduce myself. Hi, I’m Kate and I’m FERAL for Regency romance novels. They just hit different. So, I’m very excited for this one, as it’s the third in Martha Waters’s Regency Vows series.

When an ageing mother allows her thirty-something daughter to move into her apartment, she wants for her what many mothers might say they want for their child: a steady income, and, even better, a good husband with a good job with whom to start a family.

But when Green turns up with her girlfriend, Lane, in tow, her mother is unprepared and unwilling to welcome Lane into her home. In fact, she can barely bring herself to be civil. Having centred her life on her husband and child, her daughter’s definition of family is not one she can accept. Her daughter’s involvement in a case of unfair dismissal involving gay colleagues from the university where she works is similarly strange to her.

And yet when the care home where she works insists that she lower her standard of care for an elderly dementia patient who has no family, who travelled the world as a successful diplomat, who chose not to have children, Green’s mother cannot accept it. Why should not having chosen a traditional life mean that your life is worth nothing at all?

Why I’m excited for it: I really enjoy translated fiction (especially Japanese and Korean) and this story about a queer daughter coming back to live with her traditional mother sounds like just my sort of thing.

The girl knows she has a destiny before she even knows her name. She grows up in the wild, in a cave with her mother, but visions of a faraway lake come to her on the spring breeze, and when she hears a traveler speak of Artos, king of Caer Leon, she knows that her future lies at his court.

And so, brimming with magic and eager to test her strength, she breaks her covenant with her mother and, with a broken hunting spear and mended armour, rides on a bony gelding to Caer Leon. On her adventures she will meet great knights and steal the hearts of beautiful women. She will fight warriors and sorcerers. And she will find her love, and the lake, and her fate.

Release date: April 19th

Why I’m excited for it: A queer Arthurian legend retelling with a female lead. I’m sold.

When Najwa Bakri walks into her first Scrabble competition since her best friend’s death, it’s with the intention to heal and move on with her life. Perhaps it wasn’t the best idea to choose the very same competition where said best friend, Trina Low, died. It might be even though Najwa’s trying to change, she’s not ready to give up Trina just yet.

But the same can’t be said for all the other competitors. With Trina, the Scrabble Queen herself, gone, the throne is empty, and her friends are eager to be the next reigning champion. All’s fair in love and Scrabble, but all bets are off when Trina’s formerly inactive Instagram starts posting again, with cryptic messages suggesting that maybe Trina’s death wasn’t as straightforward as everyone thought. And maybe someone at the competition had something to do with it.

As secrets are revealed and the true colors of her friends are shown, it’s up to Najwa to find out who’s behind these mysterious posts—not just to save Trina’s memory, but to save herself.

Why I’m excited for it: Scrabble competitions and a murder mystery sounds like a captivating combination.

Why I’m excited for it: It’s Casey McQuiston’s debut YA novel!

Why I’m excited for it: A NEW VGHI VO NOVELLA, NEED I SAY MORE???

Kitty Talbot needs a fortune. Or rather, she needs a husband who has a fortune. This is 1818 after all, and only men have the privilege of seeking their own riches.

With only twelve weeks until the bailiffs call, launching herself into London society is the only avenue open to her, and Kitty must use every ounce of cunning and ingenuity she possesses to climb the ranks.

Why I’m excited for it: I’ve said it a lot recently, but I’ll say it again, I’m f e r a l for Regency romance at the moment, so this sounds like exactly the kind of book I’m going to love.

Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again.

Why I’m excited for it: I love Akwaeke Emezi’s writing so when I heard they had a romance novel coming out his year I did a small scream. (I also think (???) the title is inspired by the Florence + the Machine song of the same name? If not then it’s a wonderful coincidence.)

Why I’m excited for it: This is Nina LaCour’s debut adult novel and I have the feeling that it’s going to break my heart and make me cry (in the best way).

Why I’m excited for it: It’s an own voices trans retelling of the Iliad and I just get the ~vibe~ that it’s going to be incredible. (Also, we’ve been blessed by that cover.)

Marian Hayes, the Duchess of Clare, just shot her husband. Of course, the evil, murderous man deserved what was coming to him, but now she must flee to the countryside. Unfortunately, the only person she can ask for help is the charismatic criminal who is blackmailing her—and who she may have left tied up a few hours before…

Why I’m excited for it: I loved Cat Sebastian’s novel The Queer Principles of Kit Webb, so I’m excited for her next historical romance.

Cho Norie, twenty-seven and originally from Taiwan, is working an office job in Tokyo.

While her colleagues worry about the economy, life-insurance policies, marriage, and children, she is forced to keep her unconventional life hidden—including her sexuality and the violent attack that prompted her move to Japan.

There is also her unusual fascination with death: she knows from personal experience how devastating death can be, but for her it is also creative fuel.

Release date: June 7th

Why I’m excited for it: It’s a queer coming of age story set in Japan and Taiwan and the synopsis has really drawn me in.

In River City, where magic used to thrive and is now fading, the witches who once ruled the city along with their powerful King have become all but obsolete.

The city’s crumbling government is now controlled primarily by the new university and teaching hospital, which has grown to take over half of the city.

Moving between the decaying Old City and the ruthless New, four young queer people struggle with the daily hazards of life―work, school, dodging ruthless cops and unscrupulous scientists―not realizing that they have been selected to play in an age-old drama that revives the flow of magic through their world.

When a mysterious death rocks their fragile peace, the four are brought into each other’s orbits as they uncover a deeper magical conspiracy.

Why I’m excited for it: Four queer mcs? A city where the government is controlled by a university and teaching hospital? This sounds so good.

Why I’m excited for it: I read Cynthia So’s short story in the Proud anthology a few years back and really enjoyed it so I’m excited for their first full length novel. (It also come out on my birthday, an extra win for me.)
