Happy new year folks! I hope the first few days of 2021 have been positive for you, despite the worsening covid situation.
This is my FIRST TBR of 2021 and I’m feeling excited and motivated to get lots of reading done this year.
So motivated, in fact, that I’m setting myself a reasonably ambitious TBR. And it’s filled with romance. Books. Not actual romance haha. Ha. Ha. Just books. *side-eyes myself*
Let’s take a look at the books I’ll be reading this month.
The Duke and I

This being top of my TBR can only mean one thing. I’ve been well and truly swept up by the Bridgerton excitement. Having finished the Netflix series over Christmas, I’m now reading the first book and enjoying drawing comparisons with the series.
TW: For anyone considering reading this, please be aware that it does contain a rape scene.
The Viscount Who Loved Me

If the books are as addictive as the series, then I can only imagine that I’ll be reading the second book in the Bridgerton series as soon as I’ve finished the first one.
This book follows Anthony, rather than Daphne and Simon, and I’m curious to see how his character develops.
Plain Bad Heroines

This is the Sprayed Edges book club pick for December and January, and since I didn’t read it in December (whoops) I’ll be reading it this month. It’s a dark, sapphic fantasy with horror elements, and I’m excited to get started on the audiobook.
Criminal Intentions: Cult of Personality

I’m honestly OBSESSED with this series, it’s so good, I can’t even tell you. Well, I could tell you, but I’d probably spend the rest of this post talking about the series instead of telling you about the other books I’m reading.
SO. I’ll just tell you that this is a queer romance series about two detectives who solve crimes together. Instead of be gay, do crimes, it’s basically be gay, solve crimes. And it’s *CHEF’s KISS*, so I’m planning to read the seventh book in the series ASAP.
Criminal Intentions: Collateral Damage

If I finish book 7, I know I’ll be jumping straight into book 8 because these books are so addictive, so I’m adding it to my TBR for this month.
Fable

I was lucky enough to be approved for an ARC of this on Netgalley and I’m keen to pick it up before it releases in the UK on January 26th.
The story follows a girl who wants to join her father and his crew, the most feared traders in the Narrows. She seeks the assistance of another trade, West, to help her do find him.
The promise of romance, seafaring and high-octane action drew me to this one, so I’m curious to see how it pans out.
Make Up Break Up

This is another Netgalley ARC I was lucky enough to get and I’m really excited for Sandhya Menon’s first adult romance book. It’s rivals-to-lovers and those rivals happen to be exes who have competing dating apps. Sounds excellent.
Cemetery Boys

We’re not going to talk about this OK? We’re not going to talk about the fact that I KNOW I’ll love this book. We’re also not going to talk about the fact that I’ve put it on my TBR every month since September and somehow haven’t managed to read.
We’re not going to discuss any of that. We’re merely going to acknowledge that it WILL be read this month and that it’ll hopefully be a buddy read with Helen.
Which books are you hoping to read in January? Have you read any of these?
Oh I started with some romance too! Written in the Stars was my first reviewed book. Cemetery Boys was wonderful and I have high hopes for Plain Bad Heroines.
Oh you are going to love Cemetery Boys!!! Plain Bad Heroines is on my TBR for January too!
Good luck with your TBR! I’m super curious about Make Up Break Up, as I usually don’t read adult romances, yet I love Sandhya Menon 😄 I hope you enjoy Cemetery Boys, it was one of my favorite books of 2020 ❤
Hallo, Hallo Kate,
I feel you on Cemetery Boys because I have wanted to read the book ever since I hosted the author with a delightful interview!! I had to wait for Scribd and my regional library to get the book – as I was going to listen to the audio version but then I was wondering if I ought to start with the print and then move into the audioread? So far I haven’t progressed very far myself and fully intend to read this story myself this year!!
Secondly, thanks for the TW about Julia Quinn’s novel as I was going to start listening to this one ahead of seeing the Netflix series – however, now I’m unsure if I should just see the series on Netflix and forego listening to the original stories? I’m not sure if I can take one of those scenes right now — and I’ve heard mixed thoughts on the series itself wherein some are claiming their loosely based on the books and if you watch the series you won’t be spoilt for not having read them. So, now I’m on the fence!
What would you suggest as you’ve seen the series [before] you started to read the books!?
PS I am starting my #NewYearReads with Romance, too! I have my 2nd #BlackwellSisters novel to read today for my #RomanceTuesdays feature!!
