Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s theme is:
October 27: Halloween Freebie
Since I’m not much of a seasonal reader and don’t generally gravitate towards horror, I thought I’d do something a little different this week.
I’m going to list 10 spooky/atmospheric books that I’m tempted to read in the coming months, and in the comments I’d love for you to tell me if I should or shouldn’t add them to my TBR.
Mexican Gothic

The hype train for this book has been massive. Like, double decker train with 100 carriages massive. And it’s definitely tempting me to read it, but I heard that there was a lot of body gore, which is putting me off slightly. So, the question is, should I pick this one up?
The Year of the Witching

I’ve seen this book on a lot of people’s September and October TBRs and I’m definitely curious about it. I just don’t know if I’m curious enough to add it to my TBR?
Vampires Never Get Old

I’m not a massive fan of vampire stories, but this anthology includes stories from a few authors that I really like, so I’m considering reading it.
The Fell of the Dark

Again, not a massive vampire fan, but the fact that this is a queer romance and a mystery intrigues me. Something about it just sounds really entertaining so I’m tempted to add it to my TBR.
Sawkill Girls

I’ve been toying with reading this for a couple of years (since it released), and I know it has ace rep which makes me more interest in picking it up, but I’ve kind of lost interest in it this year? I don’t know why, but it’s dropped off my TBR. Should I put it back on?
Witches of Ash and Ruin

I’ve seen Ashleigh praise this book really highly so I’m tempted to read it myself if I can get a copy.
The Only Good Indians

I’m likely going to read this one because it’s on Scribd and I want to read more books by Native American authors, plus it sounds intriguing. So it’s more a question of whether or not I should bump this up my TBR?
Piranesi

I haven’t read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, but this book sounds so intriguing and strange that it’s piqued my interest.
Ghost Squad

I don’t read much Middle Grade, but this sounds so fun and spooky that I’m thinking about it listening to the audiobook.
Beyond the Ruby Veil

This isn’t exactly a spooky book, but it sounds very dark and atmospheric, perfect for the current season, so I’m wondering if I should add it to my TBR or not?
Which books do you think I should or shouldn’t add to my TBR? Feel free to shout Yes or No to each of them in the comments! Are you reading any spooky books this month?

definitely should add mexican gothic (check TW) and witches of ash & ruin to your tbr!!! the year and the witching, ghost squad and sawkill girls are on my tbr too! and vampires never get old is kinda underwhelming tbh
Yeah, I saw your thoughts on Vampires Never Get Old, it’s a shame it wasn’t more exciting! I’ve seen some pretty mixed reviews for Witches of Ash and Ruin, but it does intrigue me!
I think the main problem with Witches of Ash & Ruin is the fact that it has a LOT of POVs, I don’t know if that can bother you, but I personally didn’t mind
I don’t mind that either, so perhaps I’ll enjoy it!
I haven’t read many books on this list but omg would 10/10 recommend Ghost Squad, especially if you can find the audiobook!!! On the other hand, I did get an arc of Of Witches and Ruin and it wasn’t my type of writing like it didn’t draw me at all so idk, if you do read it go into it cautiously maybe?
Mexican Gothic is on my tbr too, so excited to get to it!!
Ghost Squad looks really sweet and it’s on Scribd, so I may give it a go 🙂 That’s a shame about Of Witches and Ruin, I have a friend who loved it, but I’ve seen other people say they were disappointed!
I would definitely read all of them. Quite a few of those are on my TBR. I’ve already read Ghost Squad, Witches of Ash and Ruin (was a bit disappointed), The Fell of Dark, and Sawkill Girls.
The Fell of Dark is really tempting me tbh! I’m currently reading The Only Good Indians and it’s so sinister!
