Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
This week’s theme is:
September 8: Books for My Younger Self
There are soooo many LGBTQIAP+ books that I wish had been around when I was younger. I would have loved to read stories about sapphic romances, ace YouTube stars, and genderfluid princes.
So here are 10 books with LGBTQIAP+ rep that I wish my younger self could have read.
Princess Princess Ever After

Not only is this a gorgeously illustrated fairy tale-type story, but it features two princesses who fall in love with each other. I would have looooved to read something like this when I was younger with two friendship, love, and adventures.
The Prince and the Dressmaker

This is a graphic novel about a genderfluid prince who loves wearing dresses and becomes friends with a dressmaker. I’d definitely have wanted to read this if it existed when I was younger because it’s so queer positive and sweet.
You Should See Me in a Crown

This book is such a blessing that I think if it had released 10 years ago it would have been one of the first F/F books I would have ever read.
Tash Hearts Tolstoy

I loved this book so, so much when I read it and I think part of that was because some of Tash’s thoughts and feelings felt similar to my own when I was questioning.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

I know this is an adult book, but I honestly think if I had read this when I was younger I might have started to question earlier, because a lot of Evelyn’s gradual realisations really resonated with me.
Proud

Proud is such an uplifting, queer-positive anthology about different LGBTQIAP+ identities and I think it’s going to bring so much light to a lot of young people who grow up reading it.
The Paper and Hearts Society: Read with Pride

This would have been ideal for me to pick up when I was a young teen and didn’t know much about LGBTQIAP+ identities. It’s a lovely, gentle story of friendship and finding your people.
Things a Bright Girl Can Do

Again, I think I would have loved this in my early teens. It’s empowering, exciting, and has an F/F romance.
Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda

So many aspects of the story (after the initial outing) are so positive and Simon’s parents are so supportive of him that I know my younger self would have adored it.
Mooncakes

This is a brilliant graphic novel, with witchcraft, magical creatures, family, and a queer romance. If I’d read this when I was a teen, it probably would have become my favourite graphic novel. It’s definitely one of my favourites now.
Which books do you with you could have read when you were younger?
