Series that are in danger of falling off my TBR and remaining unfinished forever

Over the last couple of years there are a few series that I’ve been meaning to finish. But honestly? I haven’t pushed myself to get to them because I’ve not been feeling motivated by the world, plot, or characters.

Other exciting, new series and standalones keep coming out and I’ve been focusing on them instead. The more time that passes since their release, the less likely I am to get to these series.

That’s not to say I’m axing them from my TBR. But they’re definitely sliding down it. Perhaps they’re not quite in the drop zone yet, but they’re definitely in danger.

I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy when I first read it, but it’s been a long time since I picked it up. I checked my Goodreads and I read it in 2014, so six years ago. I’ve had the sequel on my shelves for at least three years and I’ve made no move to read it.

It’s not that I don’t think I’d enjoy the rest of the series, but with the ARCs I currently have to read and other newly released books coming out, Ice like Fire is getting edged further and further down my TBR.

Graceling

Honestly, Graceling is still one of my favourite fantasy novels. Ever. I remember binge reading most of it at the airport while waiting for a flight and I was completely captivated.

I liked Fire, but I didn’t love it in the same way I loved Graceling. And then there’s Bitterblue.

I’m not as interested in this one, and I think it’s because the characters from the first two books aren’t central to the third novel. I liked Bitterblue’s character in the other books, but she was young and I didn’t get much personality from her.

BUT. Recently Kristin Cashore announced another book set in the Graceling world which made me to reconsider finishing this series. If I need to read Bitterblue for the next book to make sense, then I’ll definitely do it.

The Mortal Instruments

I only have the final book left to read in this series. But I just don’t think I can do it.

It’s been so long since I read the penultimate book, and I’m just not that interested in Cassandra Clare’s writing/world any more (sorry!).

Part of me thinks I should read it just to get closure on a series I enjoyed when I was 16/17 years old, but I have very little motivation to do so unfortunately.

The Dark Artifices

I feel the same way about Lady Midnight as I do about City of Bones in terms of a lack of motivation. The difference is, I’ve never actually started this series…

I own the first two books, but I was waiting to finish City of Heavenly Fire before I started them. And since I’ve not read that…I never actually picked up this series. And now the series is finished, I’m just not sure I will. *hides*

The Merciful Crow

I read The Merciful Crow on audio last year and I liked it, but I didn’t love it. The story just didn’t captivate me in the way that I hoped it would, so I’m not feeling in the mood to pick up the second book when it releases later this month.

I may get to it at some point if I have a cap in my TBR and want to fill it with an audiobook, but it’s just not that high up on my priority list.

The Witchlands

I read Truthwitch quite a few years ago and I found the writing style a bit clunky, but I liked the characters a lot and had every intention of carry on with it.

But other series ended up taking precedent, and I’ve never managed to pick up Windwitch. It is on Scribd though, so I might potentially get back into the series at some point.

There’s definitely a chance that I’ll finish some of these series, but they’re not high priorities, so a couple of them might end up dropping off my TBR.

Are there any series you need to finish? Do you think I should prioritize any of these?

Until next time,KateNEW

  1. Let me share with you my darkest shame.. I still haven’t finished a darker shade of magic even tho I have only 200 pages left in the last book haha

  2. I also never finished TMI lmao and I don’t plan to… another series I haven’t finished is Red Queen, I remember absolutely loving the first book and then hating the sequel, and book 3 is huge so I just can’t be bothered 😂

  3. I used to be TERRIBLE at continuing with series, I’d say it’s only on the past year or so I’ve really enjoyed reading series again, but I think a lot of that now is because, for the most part, if I don’t love the first book in a series I won’t continue with it. I read Truthwitch earlier this year and didn’t care for it, but I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the next book in the series! Graceling is a funny one for me—one of my friends loathes it and another loves it, so one day I’ll have to give it a try. 😂 Great post!

    1. That’s great that you’ve got back into series! I think for me, it depends on how much I like the series. I’ve started An Ember in the Ashes and The Black Tides of Heaven this year and I love both of them, so I’m really keen to carry on. Quite a few people have said I should definitely read Bitterblue since I posted this, so I’m probably going to give it a go at some point!

  4. Sooo many 😂😫😫 I’m on the third book of the mortal instruments, I need to read the second and third book of the scythe trilogy, divergent series, the last book of the chaos walking trilogy, the second and third books of his dark materials – the list goes on! I have a bad habit of not finishing series 😂😂

  5. I honestly think you’re not missing anything not reading and finishing any Shadowhunter series. I would never have said that a couple of years ago but The Dark Artifices just ruins things and it feels as if characters are recycled. It’s getting tiresome now.

I was also the same with Snow Like Ashes. Read the first book at least 2 or 3 years ago and liked it but never got to the sequels and I know I’ll never read them.

  6. OMG, I feel you!!! I read the first Snow Like Ashes book and then I never picked up the rest and I don’t even know why, I liked the first one, but now, I honestly don’t think I want to continuing with the rest of them 😅

  7. Probably better not to finish the series by CC. If you want closure for TMI just read a summary online, you can probably find it easily. As for Lady Midnight, I kid you not I tried reading it thrice and at one point I reached the 50% mark but nope I just couldn’t read it, I keep losing interest. Also, I’ve been told that one of the books in The Dark Artifices uses the coming out of a character as a plot twist and ughhhh.
Um I basically do not stan Cassandra Clare at all.

    1. Yeah, that’s true about the recaps! That’s a shame about Lady Midnight, but maybe it just wasn’t for you? Realistically, for me, I just don’t feel motivated to read any CC books any more. I think I’ve lost interest in the world, so it’s unlikely that I’ll carry on with TMI or start TDA. 😛

  8. Wow this is a very relatable problem. There are far too many series that I probably should finish…but will I??
That said, you should definitely read Bitterblue!! I actually think it ties Graceling and Fire together wonderfully, and Bitterblue is such a fascinating character when she’s not a tiny traumatized child. And I think the new book is following characters from Bitterblue. If you do end up picking it up, I hope you enjoy!

  9. I am terrible for not finishing series off. I did finish the Graceling series but I didn’t really enjoy Fire and Bitterblue to be honest. I am curious to hear that she’s planning on writing another book in this world, but honestly I feel like I’ve already shut the door on the series. I think I forced myself to finish TMI, but again my interested in the shadowhunting world has definitely diminished.

    1. Aww that’s a shame about Fire and Bitterblue! I actually quite enjoyed Fire, but Graceling was definitely my favourite. I’m curious about the new book too, and I feel like I might end up reading Bitterblue just so I can pick up the new book!

  10. OH I feel this post SO much. There are so many series I started reading, but ended up just…. not finishing them, and now I don’t know if I ever will, ahah, I feel a little sad about it. I started reading City of Bones like, years ago, but now I completely lost interest in the entire series. :/

    1. Aww, you’re definitely not alone! Some series I intended to finish and then just lost interest with, but some I definitively decided not to finish! I really enjoyed City of Bones when I was a teenager, but I enjoy different books now, and I’m just not that into the series any more. So, I don’t feel tooooo bad about not finishing it, because I’d have to force myself to do so and I probably wouldn’t have a good time reading it!
