Top Ten Tuesday // Recent reads that gave me a book hangover

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:

February 18: The Last Ten Books That Gave Me a Book Hangover

Oh this is a great theme. I love talking about the books that made me feel like no other books would compare. Thankfully I don’t tend to get reading slumps, but I do get almighty book hangovers.

Here are just a few.

I just finished Evelyn Hugo last week and you can bet your last penny that it’s given me a complete hangover. I couldn’t start another audiobook for two days after reading it. (That doesn’t sound like much but I normally start one immediately or within the same day.)

The power this book holds. The majesty. I was left emotionally spent after finishing this and I needed a hot second to recover.

Loveboat, Taipei had such an uplifting ending that it gave me a bit of a hangover. I did start a new book pretty much straight after, but I kept thinking about this and how much the main characters had all grown by the final chapters.

RWRB gave me such a book hangover that, despite being in the middle of a readathon, I didn’t want to start a new book.

A lot of this was to do with the fact that it was the last day of 2019, and I wanted this to be the last book I read of the year. But it was also down to how brilliant this romance was. It was humorous, sweet, and had such a good ending, that I still think about it daily.

Bless this book for giving us such a well-rounded, satisfying ending to an excellent trilogy.

I’m pretty sure I finished this, looked to the sky, and just mouthed ‘thank you’ to Kristen Ciccarelli.

And then proceeded to not know how to return to real life afterwards.

This book gave me a gradual hangover. When I first finished I rated it and moved on to my next read. But over time, I thought back to it more and more and its impact grew on me over time.

Crier’s War was exciting, full of political mutiny, and the ending was enough of a cliffhanger that I lay on my bed and just stared at my ceiling for a while.

Contemplating life.

One of the biggest book hangovers I’ve ever had was from A Conjuring of Light. So it stands to reason that another recently V.E. Schwab book would have give me a hangover.

And Tunnel of Bones certainly did that. It left me lamenting how long I’d have to wait until my next V book.

This was one of the first audiobooks I read that really struck me as fantastic.

I picked it up when I was still discovering audio and it stole my heart. The brilliant story and charismatic narration blend together flawlessly to create an fun, enticing read.

Heartstopper well and truly gave me a graphic novel hangover. I didn’t want to read any other GNs for a while after picking up this one.

In fact, I’m pretty sure I lay face-down on the floor when I learned how long I’d have to wait for volume 3.

I borrowed this from my library and enjoyed it so much that I didn’t know how the other library books I was loaning would compare.

The ending was so satisfying and ornate that I just didn’t know what to do with myself for a good day or two.

Which novels have give you a book hangover? Have you read anything that left you in a hangover for weeks?

Until next time,KateNEW

  1. Evelyn Hugo is an extraordinary book!!! LOVED it & I need to continue with the Kristen Ciccarelli trilogy, I read the first book and I loved it, it was my favorite last year, so I really want to continue reading those books 😍👏🏻✨

  2. My most recent book hangover was Beartown by Fredrik Backman, but I have a feeling Muse of Nightmares will leave me with a hangover as well haha. I’ve seen quite a few people mention Heartstopper and I really need to get round to reading it.
