Top Ten Tuesday // Books that should have been on my Halloween TBR

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:

October 29: Halloween Freebie

Unpopular opinion alert: I don’t get super hyped about Halloween.

I enjoy carving pumpkins and giving out sweets to children that come trick or treating, but I’m never fussed about cosplaying/dressing up or going out to Halloween parties. (I’m more a chilled/lazy Halloweener, what can I say.)

In the same vein, I’m never really bothered about reading spooky books in October. I love seeing people’s Halloween TBRs and I really admire people who set themselves a spooky reading challenge.

But I just never find myself wanting to read scary books around Halloween. So for this week’s theme, I’m sharing some spooky books I should have read during October, but didn’t.

39352771. sy475 Tunnel of Bones

In my defense, the only reason I didn’t read this during October is because I’d already read it in September.

I received an early finished copy of TOB and I couldn’t wait until October to devour it.

35115574Teeth in the Mist

Dawn Kurtagich’s new horror novel is the perfect Halloween read. It’s about three women, living centuries apart, who are all drawn to a sinister house and its dark secrets.

If I had been feeling in the mood for a really spooky read, I definitely would have picked this one up.

39127647His Hideous Heart

An anthology of Edgar Allan Poe-inspired tales? All from different YA authors, with a strong focus on women’s voices? Count me in.

But unfortunately I haven’t got a copy and October is almost over. Oops.

36445966. sy475 Here There Are Monsters

I’ve seen this book doing the rounds on Goodreads and Twitter, and it seems like the ideal, creepy October horror.

Should I pick it up? Definitely. Am I in the mood for horror? Not really. (But that’s on me, not the book!)

42118080. sy475 Other Words for Smoke

Another wonderfully dark book that could have, and should have, been on my October TBR, but didn’t make it.

This is one that I really do with I’d read this month because it comes highly recommended by Lauren @NorthernPlunder and Bec @TwoBookThieves.

42190061. sy475  The Devouring Gray

A dark, gripping witchy tale that I should have kept for October, but nope. I’d already read it.

Why am I like this.

15994485Frankenstein

Literally one of the prototypical Gothic, horrors.

I haven’t read it and I own a copy. October is an OPTIMUM time.

But did I pluck it out of my shelves?

No, I did not.

8621462. sx318 A Monster Calls

I borrowed this from the library a few years ago and I didn’t end up reading it, and I’ve just now realised that I totally should have got it out again to read during Halloween. Why didn’t I do that.

Ah, hindsight, welcome back.

13526174The Diviners

I know this is more of a fantasy than a horror book, but it feels like a good Halloween read. Sadly, I just haven’t found the time to pick it up this month.

Labyrinth Lost (Brooklyn Brujas, #1)Labyrinth Lost

I’ve been wanting to read this for years and I finally got a copy a few months back.

And I should have read it this month. But time.

What we can take away from this post is that I’m kicking myself for not reading a few of these books.

But in October I’ve been pretty busy reading books for blog tours, so I’m not sure I’d actually have had time, despite my best intentions. So many books, so little time has never been more true.

Which spooky books do you wish you’d picked up this month? Have you read any of these?

Until next time,KateNEW

  1. Great list! I read The Diviners this month and loved it, so I’d recommend it and I think it can be read at pretty much any time of year. 🙂 Labyrinth Lost is one I really want to read soon, and I need to give The Devouring Gray a try, too.

  2. The Diviners is such a great Halloween read, I loved it! I read Other Words for Smoke earlier on this year and I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would but it is a creepy read, I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

  3. Ahh I’m glad I’m not the only one not hyped up about Halloween at all haha. I love this list! I’m so curious about Other Words for Smoke, it sounds so intriguing, and Labyrinth Lost has been on my TBR since forever as well! Can’t wait to hear what you think of it 🙂

  4. The Diviners is one of my favorite series – I love the characters so so SO much, and I can’t wait for the final novel to be released. I also enjoyed Frankenstein – didn’t love it as much as I thought I would, but I’m happy I read it. A Monster Calls is another good one. 🙂 I really need to read His Hideous Heart and Teeth in the Mist.

  5. Ooh I read Teeth In The Mist in audiobook format and it spooked me to the core! I also recently finished reading Frankenstein for a class and absolutely loved it 😀
Let me know your thoughts on it whenever you do get to it.
