March 26: Audio Freebie
OK, it’s time for a shameful truth. I’ve only read one audiobook in my life and that was in January 2019.
*waits for sounds of shock to subside* Yes. I know. It’s a pretty poor show. I’m so used to sitting down and reading physical books that I’d never really thought about trying audio until last year. But there was so much hype surrounding a few 2018 audiobooks that I thought I’d try one I got free with my Kindle Unlimited subscription. And I enjoyed it a lot.
So I’m hoping to read more of them this year, and now that I’m learning to drive, I’m going to need them. Audible here I come. And these are 10 I might start with.
These are all modern classics that I’ve been wanting to read for ages but have never picked up. (OK, that’s not quite true of Catch 22; I’ve tried to read it twice and it never stuck.) I think they’d be perfect audiobook choices, because they’re all heavy on the prose and slower-paced.
I’ve heard that all three of these are amazing on audiobook, because they all have multiple narrators. Priory would be a re-read for me, but I’d be more than happy to pick that glorious book up again.
These books are powerful and hard-hitting and I’d like to hear them narrated, as I think it would bring even more potency to each story.

You might like to check out ‘Neverwhere’ by Neil Gaiman. It’s more of an audio drama than a word by word reading of the book but it’s really good! The cast has a lot of high-profile actors too.

Great list! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being new to the audiobook game – they’re not for everyone and that’s fine, and to be honest I didn’t start listening to them regularly until I got my own car. I find I listen to audiobooks best when I’m driving, whereas if I’m in the house I’d much rather sit down with a book. 🙂 I hope you enjoy these when you get to them and that you enjoy re-reading Priory – I’ve found audiobooks a really fun way to re-read favourites of mine!
Thanks Jess! I think I’d really enjoy listening to them, I’ve just never got into them until now! But I think with learning to drive, if/when I eventually get a car, I’ll listen to them a lot more. 🙂
I have barely read any audiobooks till now and would love to read more as well. Personally, I find it hard to get really into them compared to reading physical books. It’s different for everyone, but I think YA books work very well as an audiobook.
Ah that’s interesting! I’m curious, what do you find about them hard to get into? I know some people say the narrator can really make or break it? I definitely agree that YA books really seem to lend themselves to audio for some reason! 🙂
I think that it’s harder to focus on reading when I listen to an audiobook. When I read a physical book, reading is my main activity that moment and I sit down for it. When I listen to an audiobook, it’s hard to keep focused on the story while your eyes are looking at other things. Perhaps it’s also that I haven’t read enough audiobooks to really get used to them. Heard about the narrator point, which is also true. It needs to be pleasant to listen to.
Ah, I totally get that. There have been a couple of times when I’ve had to rewind 30 seconds to listen to a certain section again if I was concentrating more on whatever I was doing, and less on the book. I’m hoping to read more audiobooks this year, so hopefully I’ll get used to listening and doing other things 🙂
Great list and I haven’t read many audiobooks either because I struggle to stay focused. But Sadie is SO GOOD, so I highly recommend that one!
