Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:
January 1: Best Books I Read In 2018
Happy new year all! This is my first blog post of 2019, but since I’ve already posted my 2018 favourites, I thought I’d write about some of the underrated books I read last year. These ten don’t get much hype, despite being such good books, but I’d highly recommend them all.
This is a bit of an eclectic mix of contemporary and fantasy YA, poetry, and translated fiction, but all of these are definitely worth a read. If you like humour, definitely go for Convenience Store Woman, or for romance Love, Hate & Other Filters and Starfish are worth a read. All these books deal with pretty weighty issues, but they do so with sensitivity and care, which is part of what makes them so good.
Have you read any of the books on this list? Which book do you think will be your first read of 2019?
I’m still working on finishing up some books from 2018. Not sure what I’ll pick up next for 2019.
Ah nice, what are you reading at the moment? 🙂
Bird Box by Josh Malerman and I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb
Oh, lots of people seem to be reading Bird Box at the moment! Is that because the film just came out on Netflix?
That would be my guess. I don’t think I heard about it until the movie came out.
Oh, I have heard amazing things about Starfish.
It’s really good! And she’s got another book that’s coming out this year in the UK (it’s already out in the US) – Summer Bird Blue 🙂
I really wanna read Starfish and Empire in the Sand! Maybe I’ll take the last with me when I’m in the bookstore next time!
I’d highly recommend them both! Empire of Sand is a fantasy/adventure novel that deals with corrupt political systems and expectations of women, and Starfish is a contemporary that deals with social anxiety and emotional abuse. They’re really good but in very different ways!
I’ll take them with me next time!!
Yay, excellent! 🙂
I have a copy of A girl like that at home! Seems like I should read it soon?😊 Happy new year!✨
Ooh yes, I’d definitely recommend giving it a go! And if you haven’t already, don’t read the synopsis. That’s what I did and it really improved my reading experience with that book 🙂
Ohh thank you for the advice! Then I won’t!
I didn’t get on with Easy Prey but I agree with Out Of The Blue! ❤
Ah that’s a shame, I’m curious to know what you didn’t enjoy about it? (I always like hearing people’s differing opinions) Out of the Blue was so sweet ❤
I just didn’t get on with the writing style and my mind kept getting muddled x
I’ve been meaning to pick up I Am Thunder for a while now. Maybe I actually will at last
I’d already posted about my top ten books of 2018 so I’m talking about the books I’d be stuck on a desert island with in this week’s TTT
I’d definitely recommend it, I found it intensely moving, and it gives such insight into how easily young teens can be radicalised. Will check out your post! 🙂
Great list! I just picked up THE HATING GAME, which is completely different to what I usually read, and I’m enjoying it so far!
Oh, I’m curious to hear what you think of that one! I’ve heard quite a few good reviews of it 😀
Oh yes, some excellent books there! I loved Wild Embers and Girl In The Broken Mirror too.

Thanks Cora! The more I think about Wild Embers, the more I loved it 🙂
Great list! I haven’t heard of a lot of these, so thanks for bringing them to my attention – I’ll have to check them out. 🙂
Thanks Jess! Perhaps you might find some new books you’re interested in 🙂
