Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:
November 6: Backlist Books I Want to Read
Oh this topic is to perfect for me, they may as well @ me next time. I have so many books on my shelves that are more than a few years old and I’ve still yet to get to, that my ‘backlist’ is probably at least a third of my shelves at this point (help). But I’ve picked ten that I’m desperate to read, but am somehow still procrastinating on.
These four have been out for quite a few years (more than a few in the case of 1984) and I’ve owned all of them for at least two or three years, but still haven’t managed to pick them up. I think a combination of knowing that they’ll always be there for when I have some time and constantly picking up exciting new releases is responsible for me having let them sit on my shelves for a while.
Assassin’s Apprentice is the only one of these three that I actually own, but I’ve come close to borrowing Wild Swans from the library so many times that it’s become part of my virtual backlist. Nevernight is another that I’ve been saying I’ll read for about a year, and it sounds right up my street, but I always end up prioritising other books. I think once a book has been out for a while, it sometimes gets moved down my TBR so that I can get to newer releases first. And thus it ends up on the backlist. A place where no book wants to go.
With The Bloody Chamber, I’m guilty of not motivating myself enough to pick it up. It sounds intriguing, it has predominantly good reviews, and I could easily read it in a few hours, but I always look at other books and think that looks more exciting. So I pick those up instead. Hopefully, Radio Silence won’t be staying on my backlist for long, as I’ve vowed to try and read it by the end of the year. I’ve owned a copy for about two years, but I only read my first Alice Oseman book earlier this year, so until that point, I hadn’t discovered how great her writing is. But now that I have, I’m determined to get to it. Emma is another book I think I’d really enjoy, but I have it on e-book, and every time I open my library, I see another book that I want to read sooner.
So those are my ten sins. I’m feeling increasingly guilty about still not having read them, so I’ve decided to do something about it! Help me out by picking one book from this list, and I’ll try and read it before the end of this month, so it can finally be removed from my backlist. The book with the most votes will be the one I read.
Which books are on your backlist? Which one of these should I try and read during November?
Really liked seeing this list! I’m curious to see what you’ll think of an ember in the ashes! Loved that book a lot. Assassin’s apprentice is still on my tbr and Nevernight as well. Started both books but haven’t gotten around to finish them yet. Hundred thousand kingdoms looks really intriguing as well, I have to say. Emma by Austen is one I still want to read as well but I don’t come around as often as I’d like to reading classics anymore, lol.
I’ve made a backlist as well in today’s TTT article over on my blog, but there are sooo many backlist books on my tbr at the moment haha.
Aww thanks Melissa! Yeah, I’ve been meaning to read Ember for so long that I *need* to get to it soon, and so many people love it too. One of my best pals loves Nevernight, so I definitely need to read that soon to appease her. 🙂 I know what you mean about classics – I read so many of them at university but I they’re not my go-to genre (fantasy is) so I don’t get to read them as often any more. Although I recently watched Vanity Fair on TV and now I’m seriously contemplating reading that, because I enjoyed the show a lot. I’ll have to check out your list too! 😀
Radio Silence is AMAZING, amd 100% gets my vote! I still haven’t read Solitaire, so I may have to follow your example and read before the endof the year 😊
Amy x
Ooooh that makes me so excited to get to it! So far Radio Silence has the most votes, so it might end up being the one I read! 😀 I’ve not read Solitaire either, so I’d be keen to hear what you think if you decide to pick it up! 🙂
I haven’t read any of these but I am drawn to the cover of Radio Silence! I don’t know 🤷🏻♀️ what’s it’s about though!
This is actually the old cover and it’s been redone to match the covers of Alice Oseman’s other novels, but I actually really like this one too! Plus, Radio Silence seems to have the most votes so far, so that might be the one I read! 😀 (Here’s a quick synopsis of the novel, if you wanted to know what it’s about 🙂 https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/25322449-radio-silence)
Radio Silence is honestly amazing, it’s such a gorgeous story.
Nevernight is on my TBR too.

So many people seem to adore Radio Silence, which makes me even more keen to get to it! It seems to have the most votes so far too 😉 Is Nevernight on your immediate TBR, or one you’re hoping to pick up in the not to distant future?
Not too distant future, I’ve had a copy for ages!
I hope we both get to it soon then! 😀
I have failed to read my backlist with all intention to do so this year. I lived Assassin’s Apprentice so if recommend that. There’s so many books I want to read and never seems to be enough time 😂
I have quite a few of these on my TBR pile as well! I just need more time to read 😂. I adore Emma but I know quite a few people find her irritating. I hope you love her!
Picking just 10 books for this prompt was SO HARD. Good luck narrowing it down to just one to read 😉
No kidding! I have so many others that I need to get to, but these are some of the ones I’m most keen to get to (and feeling most guilty about). Haha thanks, which would you suggest I go for? 😀
Haha I really don’t know! I really enjoyed An Ember in the Ashes, but I’ve heard good things about Radio Silence and Nevernight as well!
Hehe, well Radio Silence ended up getting the most votes both here and on Twitter, so I think I’ll be reading that! I definitely want to get to Ember and Nevernight in the not to distant future though 🙂 The new Ember covers are beautiful too!
Great list! The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories is a great (albeit strange) collection so I recommend giving it a try. Assassin’s Apprentice and Wild Swans have both been on my TBR for yonks too, so you’re definitely not alone!
Some of my favorite books are on your list! I adore Assassin’s Apprentice, Radio Silence, and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms. I didn’t love An Ember in the Ashes, but I’m obviously in the minority on that one. I hope you’ll end up enjoying all of these books 🙂
Aww that’s great to hear! Radio Silence ended up winning, so I’m trying to make sure I read that this month! 😀
Oh this is a great list! I have to scream about Radio Silence because well, you know me, so PLEASE READ RADIO SILENCE! I loved it so, so very much 😀 I’m also eager for you to read An Ember in the Ashes, I didn’t expect much of it, but I ended up really loving it 🙂
Happy reading! 🙂
I only read Nevernight, and I LOVED it, so I’ll recommend that one haha
Emma was the last Austen novel I had to read and I ended up doing a buddy read of it and it was the best decision. It’s the longest Austen novel, so I needed that extra motivation. I love both the N.K. Jemisin books I’ve picked up.
Ah I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it Alicia! I’ve heard a lot of people say they didn’t really like Emma, but I’m still super keen to read it 😀 I have a feeling The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms will be just my sort of fantasy novel too 🙂
I absolutely loved The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms! Great list, I hope you love them all 😊
Ooh that’s great to hear! It has some really great reviews on Goodreads, which makes me even more excited to eventually pick it up! 😀 Thank you!
READ THE BONE SEASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 😀
Hahaha sounds like you’re perhaps a tiny bit of fan? 😉
The Mime Order is my favourite of the series but the world and characters are so interesting! 🙂
I vote for Nevernight! And maybe if you start now you can also binge the next book before the third one comes out, haha! Trust me you’ll be glad you did, these books are so good! 😀
Hehe thanks Mogsy! I’m afraid Radio Silence got the most votes, so I’ll be reading that at some point this month, but I definitely intend to pick up Nevernight soon! 😀 Especially since you’ve given it such high praise!
I just picked up the audiobook of The Assassin’s Apprentice from my library to give a try. Out of the ones you listed I have only read The Bone Season, which I really enjoyed.
Ooh nice, how’s the audiobook so far? I’m glad you enjoyed The Bone Season! Do you think you’ll read The Priory of the Orange Tree? I’ve heard a lot of people say they really enjoy Samantha Shannon’s writing, so I’m looking forward to getting to her books eventually! 🙂
So far I am liking the narrator a lot. I am not sure if I will because my reading taste as of late is not quite that genre. I am a huge mood reader and I want to give it a fair go. I hope that makes sense.
Yeah, that definitely makes sense! I hope the narrator is good enough that you want to stick with it and it ends up being a good read 🙂
Thanks!
Ah you should definitely read Radio Silence, that book is AMAZING! I also still want to read Nevernight soon, I’ve heard so many great things about that book. I also need to read 1984, haha.
Radio Silence got the most votes, so I’ll definitely be reading that! Haha I guess we both have similar books to get to! 😀
