Top Ten Tuesday: Books to help you slay that reading slump

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:

August 21: Books to Pull You Out of a Reading Slump

If I’m ever in a reading slump, I tend to go for fast-paced, action-heavy books, to jettison me right out of it. These are a few of my top picks for slaying that reading slump.

Sense a pattern here? Yeah, me too. Most of these are YA fantasy novels with feminist undertones (or overtones), because these are the type of books that get me back into reading when I need a boost. They’re the type of books I pick up and can’t put dow. Sure, I Am Thunder is YA contemporary, Invictus is a YA sci-fi and Vicious is more of a supernatural thriller (also uncategorisable in its brilliance), but each of these held me captivated the entire time and are definitely books I’d pick up if I needed to ditch a slump.

Do you ever find yourself in a slump? What sort of books do you go to when you need to get out of one?

Until next time

  1. You have some really great choices on your list Kate! There are only one or two that I haven’t read yet so I’ll keep them in mind should I find myself in a slump any time soon (although hopefully that won’t be necessary!)

    1. Thanks Kelly! I definitely hope you don’t find yourself in a slump! Thankfully, I haven’t been in one for quite a while, but next time I am, I’ll probably reach for one of these. What’s your go-to method for getting out of a slump? I’ve heard some people say they just read and read to try and get over it, while others wait for it to pass and then start reading again!

      1. Luckily I don’t find myself in too many slumps. When I do it is usually because I’m trying to read the wrong type of book so I’ll pick up something from a completely different genre or a reread of a fave usually helps!

  2. Vicious and To Kill a Kingdom are both epic picks. I definitely think a book that has an addictive quality makes it easier to break the slump, especially when you have a cat and mouse chase with as much intensity as Eli and Victor’s had.

    1. It took me ages to finish Children of Blood and Bone for some reason, but when I finally did it was 100% worth it! I actually went into To Kill A Kingdom with low expectations and I think that’s why I enjoyed it a lot – because I didn’t think it was going to be as good as it was 😊

      1. Ahh I’m glad!! I have the book and read a couple chapters and then forgot so it’ll be read soon (she says) 😂 Am glad you enjoyed it!! I think I may have done exactly to opposite 👀😂
