This is my genre, tell me yours Book Tag

I was tagged to do this by Beth @ReadingEveryNight, and I love talking about my favourite genre, so it seems like a tag I’ll really enjoy.

Rules:

  • Credit the bad bad Drew at The Tattooed Book Geek as the creator of the tag. Either use the created tag name graphic or create your own and link back to his blog.
  • Answer the questions.
  • Tag as many people as you want.

What’s your favourite genre?

It’s always been, and probably always will be, fantasy.

Who is your favourite author from the genre?

My leading ladies are V. E. Scwab, Leigh Bardugo and Laini Taylor. These women are incredible writer in general, but their fantasy novels are second to none. They know exactly how to build a world and form a character in a way that leaves you desperate for more of their books.

What is it about the genre that keeps you pulling back?

Honestly, it’s all about the magic for me. I’ve always loved the idea of powers, so reading about characters who have them is so exciting for me. If you add magic to mythical lands, fantastical happenings, and diverse characters then it’s pretty much a done deal that I’ll read your book.

What’s the book that started your love for your favourite genre?

One of the earliest fantasy series I can remember reading was Trudi Canavan’s The Magician’s Guild trilogy. I adored that series (and still do) and it was basically a gateway into the genre for me. It unlocked my love of stories about magic, and I read The Hobbit and the Harry Potter series around the same time, which only fuelled my enjoyment of the genre further.

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading the genre, what would you choose and why?

I guess I’ve got to pick my favourite trilogy of all time. I think A Darker Shade of Magic is such a wonderfully versatile book, in that it’s ideal for new readers of the genre, but is also perfect for seasoned veterans, who have been reading fantasy for years, because it’s so unique.

Why do you read?

I read to explore other worlds, meet new characters, and experience a type of magic that doesn’t exist in our world, but does exist in theirs.

  1. Thank you so much for tagging me! ♥ This Tag seems like a lot of fun, so I hope to do it soon! Fantasy is my favorite genre as well & I really need to finally read Six of Crows and Strange the Dreamer 😀

    1. No problem, hope you enjoy it! Ohhh please read Six of Crows and Strange, they’re both fab! It took me ages to get round to Strange (I only read it in June/July) and I was kicking myself for not reading it sooner, because it’s definitely worth the hype!

  2. Thank you so much for tagging me! 🙂 I really enjoy this tag and loved your answers here – though I am not the biggest fantasy reader, I am getting into this genre and loving it more and more,it’s so thrilling to read and the ADSOM series is incredible ❤

      1. YES I HAVE and ACOL… well… 😭😭 it was such a brilliant series. I didn’t expect to love it this much, but I really did, it was fantastic ❤

  3. Great answers for this tag Kate. My favourite genre is fantasy too and I feel like pretty much all of your answers could be my answers as well. V.E. Schwab is a favourite author of mine along with Laini Taylor and Leigh Bardugo (anything any of those authors writes immediately goes to the top of my TBR list). Also the Shades of Magic books are probably my all-time favourite too, as hard as it is to pick just one favourite that series is probably it. 😀
Great post, and again great answers. 🙂 ❤

    1. We love all the same things when it comes to fantasy books 😀 Yeah, I’m the same with Laini, Leigh, and V – they’re autobuys for me 🙂 I’ve just finished my first ever re-read of ADSOM and oh my god it was just as amazing second time around 😀 ❤

      1. I know literally NO ONE talks or even knows about it 😭 it deserves so much though! It’s got good characters, a complex plot, realistic romance, a cool magic system and an interesting magic school! I like the Magician’s Guild magic system more than I like the HP one to be honest!

    1. Really?! That’s so great! I think it’s an undervalued trilogy in the book community, as I don’t often see people mention it, but it was one of the first fantasy series I fell in love with. 🙂 Have you read any of Trudi Canavan’s other work? I really loved the prequel to the trilogy!
