Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d mash together to create a wild new story

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. This week’s theme is:

August 7: Books You’d Mash Together (pick two books you think would make an epic story if combined)

This week’s topic is such an interesting one, as I rarely think about combining books since they’re often set in such disparate worlds. But there are definitely a few I think could work together.

Six of Crows + Ace of Shades // These two books have similar ‘sin city’ vibes, and both are about gangs and gambling/swindling. While the worlds are pretty different, I’d love to see how the dregs would interact with Levi and Enne. I have a feeling that Kaz wouldn’t like Levi, but Levi would look up to him.

Simon VS + Invictus // Honestly, I’d kind of love to throw Simon and Blue onto the Invictus and see their adventures unfold with Far, Priya and the rest of the crew. Both books were funny, so I think combining them together would be hilarious.

A Darker Shade of Magic + Harry Potter // OK, I’m just going to say it. I would love to drop the characters from ADSOM into Hogwarts. It would be a dream crossover (and I’m sure there’s probably already fanfiction about it). Lila would be a Slytherin, hands down. Kell would be a Ravenclaw. Rhy would be a Gryffindor. And Alucard would probably be a combination of all four to be honest.

Sabriel + City of Ghosts // I feel like Sabriel, with her ability to ‘go into’ death and Cass with her ability to talk to ghosts would be best of friends. They could share a flat in Edinburgh, and help each other out with their abilities. Plus, they both like cats, so.

Starfish + Daughter of Smoke and Bone // I know this is perhaps an unusual combination, but I think Kiko and Karou would get on well. I could see them bonding over their love of art, and while the DOSAB universe might make Kiko anxious, I think Karou’s calming presence would help her out.

If you could mash two books together, which would you choose? Do you think my choices would work, or do you think they’d be terrible?

Until next time

  1. Kate! I love the idea of putting Ace of Shades and Six of Crows together, those worlds would definitely mesh together quite nicely and I’d love to see how the different characters would get on.
Obviously a big YES to mashing up Shades of Magic and Harry Potter too!! Great choices 🙂

  2. These are great picks for this weeks topic Kate, I actually wanted to feature ADSOM in my post this week but I couldn’t work out how to make that book anymore epic than it already is. 🙂
I do think Six of Crows and Ace of Shades mashed together would make a brilliant read (honestly I wish I could read it!)
Again great picks and great post as well. 🙂 ❤️

    1. Haha I definitely get what you mean – ADSOM is incredibly on it’s own, and I don’t even know if HP would make it more epic, but it would certainly be interesting to see our faves sorted into their houses! I wish I could read SOC + Ace of Shades too, maybe we can petition the authors to write a short story about both sets of characters 😛
