July 31: Popular Books that Lived Up to the Hype
It’s pretty easy for books to get overhyped before their release when the whole community is talking about them. We all have different tastes, so while the book may live up to the hype for one person, it may not for another. I can think of plenty of times when I went into a book expecting a great read and was disappointed.
But not these books. Oh no. These books had serious hype, and they all lived up to it. Most managed to surpass my expectations, which were pretty high.
For me, every one of these books was really hyped, but they were all worth the praise heaped on them. I read Strange the Dreamer, Six of Crows, and The Gentleman’s Guide months after they came out, but they still managed to be as good as the hype predicted, and were definitely worth the wait.

I looooooove Daughter of Smoke and Bone so much! I actually originally read a library book copy, so I’ve never owned a copy until this weekend when I bought it at YALC! 🙂

Yess – definitely got to agree with THUG & Children of Blood and Bone. I avoided both of those books for a little while because they were so super hyped but then fell in love with them when I did read them. Definitely think they live up to the (deserved) hype, AND they are both so lovely in person 😀
They’re both 5 star reads for me, so they definitely lived up to all the praise and excitement surrounding them. Also, I think I saw you once this weekend at YALC, but was busy queueing for a signing so couldn’t come say hi! Can’t believe we missed each other! Did you have a good time?
Fantastic list, Kate, I so agree with so many of these ❤ I was – and still am – scared to read so many books because of the hype, but it's amazing when they don't disappoint, and better when they actually manage to be better than everything you expected 🙂 I loved Six of Crows, THUG and Children of Blood and Bone so much ❤
Thanks Marie! Yeah, I think the hype has definitely made me eager to read a few books that I then didn’t end up liking, but these ten were definitely worth all the praise they got! 🙂
This is a great list Kate, and these are some of my favourite books as well. Laini Taylor is such an incredible author, I read Strange the Dreamer the second I had it in my hands and of course it lived up to my expectations (considering how much I loved Daughter of Smoke and Bone I didn’t really expect anything else!) I’ve seen THUG on a few peoples lists so far and honestly I’m not surprised! It’s one of those books that is such a phenomenon in the YA genre. 😀

I totally forgot about Strange the Dreamer, but so many yeses for that one. The writing and storytelling were superb.
I actually only read Strange a few weeks back, after having it on my TBR for more than a year, so it had a lot of hype to live up to over a long period of time, and somehow it still managed to! 🙂
So many amazing books on this list. A Conjuring of Light, Six of Crows, DoSaB, and Invictus all deserve the hype. I still need to read Strange the Dreamer, so once this slump fades away I’m making it a priority read!!
I NEED to read Strange the Dreamer! I love Laini Taylor’s writing, so I’m not sure why I haven’t read it yet?! I bought The Name of the Wind a few weeks back, so I’m glad to see you enjoyed it!
