April was a fun and busy month for me, as I did a lot of travelling in between work. Despite being busy, I still managed to find time to pick up a few books.
When I visited my sister in France, we went to Paris and I treated myself to Men Explain Things To Me from Shakespeare and Co. This is a short anthology of feminist essays, which I’ve since read and enjoyed. I also found out that the author, Rebecca Solnit, went to university in Paris, so it was a quirk of fate that I happened to buy the book there.
I went to London for a weekend in the middle of April and I picked up a copy of Circe from Waterstones Piccadilly (the first time I’ve ever been). This is one of my more highly anticipated reads of the year, but I haven’t managed to start it yet (thank you giant TBR pile). Hopefully I’ll find time to get to it in June or July.
As well as the gorgeous hardbacks of Circe and Men Explain Things To Me, I bought a hardback copy of Of Fire and Stars from the wonderful Kelly @KellysRambles, and traded my ARC of Everless for an ARC of The Smoke Thieves, which I’m currently reading (but sadly not loving).
Have you picked up any good books recently? Do you prefer to buy paperbacks or hardbacks?
Oh this is a lovely haul, all of these books look so pretty – especially OF Fire and Stars 🙂 hope you’ll love all of them 🙂
Thanks Marie! Yes, I love the hardback covers a lot, and The Smoke Thieves has sprayed edges, so they’re all very pretty. 🙂
Circe looks so pretty!
It does, doesn’t it! The inside is gorgeous too, but I haven’t taken photos of it yet. I should have probably included one in this post, but I’ll put it on my Instagram instead. 😉
This is a great haul Kate, and I really hope you love Circe as well. It’s a gorgeous book isn’t it, and the story inside is just as beautiful (also how great is the Piccadilly Waterstones branch, so many floors of so many amazing books).
Great post and great pictures. 🙂 ❤
Thanks Beth, I’m looking forward to starting it! My copy has two dust jackets on for some reason, but it actually works in my favour, as the outside one is a little scratched, but the inside one is perfect. I loved Waterstones Piccadilly, I’m definitely going to have to go back next time I’m in London because we spent about an hour there, but I could have easily spent 3-4 hours. 😉
Just means there’s an extra level of protection for such an amazing book (and it is an amazing book)!
Oh sometimes I do spend hours there. There are so many floors to explore and so many books to check out too. 😀
Ahahah that’s true! Plus, I’ve never had another hardback that accidentally had two dust jackets on so it makes it pretty unique. Yeah, I could easily spend half a day (or maybe even a full day) there 😀
I’ve bought way too many books this month! I tend to buy paperbacks because they’re cheaper (and lighter to carry) but I couldn’t resist picking up that gorgeous hardback of Circe!
OMG the UK cover of Circe is sooo beautiful, I am in awe! It was an incredible book too, so I hope you love it!
Isn’t it beautiful?! I thought it was the US one when I first saw it, but I was pretty thrilled when I found out it’s the UK one, and I’m so pleased I own it. It’s going to be wonderful for taking Instagram photos 😉 Have you read it already? What rating did you give it? I’ve heard really good reviews from everyone I know who’s read it so far.
You’ve bought some great books. I still want to buy and read Circe, I really enjoyed The Song of Achilles and the cover is just very pretty, haha! I prefer(reading) paperbacks, but hardcovers are more beautiful…
Thank you! ❤ Well, I'll let you know whether I'd recommend Circe once I start reading it. 😀 Like you, I loved The Song of Achilles, so I'm certain I'll love this one as well. Totally agree with you about paperbacks/hardbacks, hardbacks are so well designed, but paperbacks are portable!
Circe is SUCH a stunning book, isn’t it? Luckily, the story inside is equally wonderful, I really enjoyed it, and I hope you will too when you get to it!
All the books you got are really aesthetic and just seeing them makes e want to take photos even though I don’t have them 😂 I bought Children of Blood and Bone and The Night Circus yesterday. Hoping to get to them soon!
READ!! CIRCE!! PLEASE!!
Omg YES CAPTAIN. I’ll try and get to it this month (or next). 😉
I just read CIRCE and I LOVED IT! Also, the cover is beautiful!! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think I’m going to try and get to it either this month or next 🙂
