This week I started Men Explain Things To Me, which is a short book of feminist essays. I picked this up while I was in Shakespeare and Co. in Paris, and in one of the essays I learned that the author actually studied at university in Paris. What a coincidence. Maybe I was meant to find this book there.
One of the most exciting new political movements on Earth is the Native Canadian indigenous rights movement, with feminist and environmental overtones, called Idle No More. On December 27th, shortly after the movement took off, a Native woman was kidnapped, raped, beaten, and left for dead in Thunder Bay, Ontario, by men whose remarks framed the crime as retaliation against Idle No More. Afterward, she walked four hours through the bitter cold and survived to tell her tale.
Confession time. This quote is not from page 56. Or 56% of the way through the book. But I found this story so powerful and intensely moving that I wanted to include for today’s quote. This collection of essays is a stirring call to arms for anyone who identifies as a feminist (and everyone who doesn’t) and it’s stories like these that remind us why we fight for equality.
