It’s Christmas Eve, which means it’s the final day of Blogmas! I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first Blogmas and thought I’d close it out, after yesterday’s Worst Books I’ve Read This Year post, with the best books I’ve read this year.
These are all books I gave 5 stars too, which doesn’t happen all that often, and they were really special for me.
I’ve been lucky enough to have picked up some great books this year, but these were my absolute favourites. Finishing the ADSOM series was just EVERYTHING to me, because I’ve never read a fantasy series so good, and it’s now firmly my favorite trilogy of all time. The writing, characters, and world are JUST INCREDIBLE. I cried, I laughed, I gasped out loud. This series honestly made my year and I’ll never forget the incredible amount of feeling it gave me.
The Hate U Give was powerful, moving, and is now my go-to recommendation when people want to read a new stand-alone. It’s a book that every white person should read to educate themselves about the Black Lives Matter movement, and the difficulties that black people face every day. Daughter of Smoke and Bone was such an unexpectedly thrilling read, and I fell in love with the characters and world. I finished the trilogy this year, and loved books two and three as well, but I the first book left me the most breathless.
Hold Your Own is the only poetry anthology on this list, but it’s without doubt the best anthology I’ve ever read. Kate Tempest’s voice and themes spoke to me in a way that poetry never has before, and reignited my love of the form. The Language of Thorns is a fairy tale-based short story collection and it’s brilliantly written. Each story has a fable-like message, and there’s great LGBTQIA+ rep, as well as some truly stunning illustrations that grow across the pages as the stories progress.
Other honorable mentions that I loved this year:
These were books I loved and gave 4 or 4.5 stars to. Each one was exciting, dramatic, and memorable enough merit a special mention on this list.
As this is my final post of Blogmas, I want to thank everyone who’s liked and commented on my posts and wish you all a very merry Christmas! I’ll be posting my 2017 yearly round up between Christmas and New Year, so watch out for that.
What are some of your favourite reads of 2017? Did you enjoy any of the books on my list? I’d love to hear from you!
Do Not Say We Have Nothing is amazing!
It really is! I was astounded by how emotional the writing was.
Wait. Does Blogmas end on the 24th? I was led to believe it was all the way through December?
Well, I think a lot of people do it from 1st to 24th, but you can do it however you want really! Some people do it from 1st to 12th and some do it for the whole of December, so it’s up to you 🙂
OK thank you
Lovely blogpost, I really liked to read about the best books you’ve read in 2017. I also loved The Hate U Give, Moxie and When Dimple Met Rishi. I really want to read A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light, I absolutely loved A Darker Shade of Magic!
