August 22: Back To School Freebie
I had so many ideas for this one, but I decided to pick some crucial LGBTQIA+ books I think should be stocked in school libraries, because I remember in my school library we didn’t have enough by a long shot.
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve not read all of these books yet, but I’ve heard brilliant things about every single one. And the ones I haven’t are all on my TBR for this year.
Are there any other books I’ve missed that should definitely go on this list? What are some of your favourite LGBTQIA+ reads you think high schoolers would enjoy? Let me know!

You picked incredible readings here, but I would probably add I’ll Give you the Sun & We are Okay, are two of my favorite books that I read this year. They’re so beautiful😍💕
Aww, thanks Sofii! Ah yes, I really want to read both of those! One of my friends recommends me I’ll Give You The Sun to me at least once a month, so I definitely need to get to it soon.
Agree so much with the Becky Albertalli ones! Another great one would be This Book Is Gay by Juno Dawson though I know it’s been banned in a lot of libraries.
Oooh yes, I really want to read This Book Is Gay and The Gender Games by Juno Dawson. Yeah, I’d heard that it’d been banned in quite a few places in the US, which is so sad, as it might just be *the* book that a teen needs to read while they’re growing up. We can only hope (and campaign where possible) for them to repeal the bans asap.

I loved Simon Vs and History is All You Left Me, sadly those are the only two on your list I’ve actually read but I have Becky Albertalli’s other book on my to-read list, along with every book Nina LaCour has written. Hopefully I’ll be able to get around to them soon.

Thanks Beth! Yeah, it’s so important for teens and young children to see themselves represented in books, and I think school should stock as wide an array of diverse books as they possibly can. I definitely think we need more LBGTQIA+ books on the curriculum too. I hope you get to pick up the books you’re hoping to read soon!

*hides in shame* I can’t believe I’m admitting this but I’ve yet o read a single one of these books. I love Adam Silvera’s More Happy Than not and History is on my immediate tbr pile so hopefully I can tick it off soon. I definitely think it’s crucial to give lgbtqia books a spotlight, especially in school.
There’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed about! Sometimes due to circumstances out of our control we end up not reading books we really want to for ages – despite being eager to pick them up. I’ve do it all the time because the book is either not available at my library, or I want to read books I already own before buying new ones. (The age-old bookworm problem!) I do hope you enjoy the Adam Silvera books you want to read whenever you’re able to get to them though! I’ve heard so many positive reviews of every one of his works! And yes, I agree about LGBTQIA+ books being vital in schools – that’s why I wanted to make this post! 🙂
