Top Ten Tuesday: Ten manga characters I’d name a pet after

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature hosted over at The Broke and The Bookish, and this weeks theme is: characters you’d name a child/pet/car after:

‘Ten Characters I’d Name A Child/Dog/Cat/Car/Etc. After — we did this topic back in 2011 and thought it might be fun to revisit it…feel free to spin it how you need!’

I don’t actually have any pets at the moment (*sad face*), but I love animals and hope to have more fluffy pals in the future. (I’ve actually always wanted a pig (of the micro or macro kind) but I feel that’s much less likely than a rabbit or hamster.)

Since I’m in Japan, and trying to improve my Japanese, I thought I’d go for an anime/manga theme because Japanese names often have really interesting meanings.

So let’s get into it!

1. Hawk-chan from Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Tazai)

hawk chan.jpg

OK I had to start with Hawk-chan because, although his name isn’t really Japanese, he’s a pig. Hawk-chan is no average pet though, he brings light-hearted, sarcastic humour and more often than not helps save the day. I know it’s the most otaku name ever (it has chan in it for goodness sake), but I just love this character and think the name is adorable (they named the pig character after a bird – if that’s not beautiful irony I don’t know what is).

2. Meliodas from Seven Deadly Sins (Nanatsu no Tazai)

meliodas

Also from Nanatsu no Tazai, Meliodas is the captain of the ‘Sins’ and the protagonist of the story. Not only is his character great, but his name is so lyrical to pronounce that I’d definitely enjoy using it on a daily basis.

3. Natsu from Fairy Tail

natsu

Natsu means ‘summer’ or ‘born in summer’ in Japanese and, similar to Meliodas, I just think it’s a beautiful word.

4. Miyuki from The Irregular at Magic High School (Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei)

Miyuki’s character design is as beautiful as her name, which can have a number of different meanings in Japanese, including ‘beautiful fortune’, ‘deep snow’ and ‘beautiful happiness’.

5. Levi from Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin)

levi

If I had a black cat and it was aloof and a badass, I’d have no choice but to call it Levi .

6. Byakuya from Bleach

byakuya

If I had a second black cat and it was aloof and a badass, I’d name it Byakuya. Byakuya means ‘white night’ in Japanese.

7. Zen from Snow White with Red Hair (Akagami no Shirayuki)

zen

Zen would make such a cute name for any kind of pet, and it would remind me of how much I like this character.

8. Arrietty from Arrietty (Karigurashi no Arriety)

ARRIETTY un film de Hiromasa Yonebayashi

Again, Arrietty is such an aesthetically pleasing name, I’d love to give it to one of my pets.

9. Yona from Yona of the Dawn (Akatsuki no Yona)

yona

Yona has such great character development during this series, that I’d be more than happy to name two or three different pets after her.

10. Azusa from Orange

Azusa is so bouncy and energetic all the time that she’s like a little puppy. Need I say more.

So there’s my Top Ten for this week! As usual, let me know what names you guys selected for this one and link me to your TTTs!
